Assamese Hindu teachers being forcibly married by Muslims, claims BJP MLA

In a heated session at the Assam Assembly, BJP MLA Ramakanta Deori made some serious allegations relating to the safety and security of TET teachers in his constituency. Deori said that Assamese Hindu TET teachers in the Lahorighat area are being forced to marry Muslims. Out of fear, some such teachers are accepting the weddings, he added.

Opposition parties reacted angrily to the comments of MLA. Congress and AIUDF condemned the allegations and called for a magisterial inquiry into the issue.

The MLA further said that women TET teachers, who are posted in the adjacent district of Morigaon, continue to live under threat.

In June 2024, the Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced a major initiative to address the staffing issue in education throughout the state. He said that there is a plan to introduce 35,000 new vacancies of regular teachers under the Shiksha Abhiyan. The move includes a special recruitment drive allowing contractual SSA teachers to apply for these new positions. Once these 35,000 posts get filled, the corresponding contractual posts would get dissolved and thus fresh candidates may get an opportunity.
