The NTPC thermal power plant in Salakati has sparked widespread concern among local residents, who claim its operations are threatening their environment and livelihoods.
Farmers from nearly 15 villages in the vicinity are grappling with the severe fallout of chemical waste discharged through the plant's pipelines. The contamination has reportedly led to the mass death of fish in ponds, destruction of farmlands, and illness among livestock that consumed the polluted water.
"The situation is dire," lamented a local farmer, citing significant losses in agriculture and livestock, which form the backbone of their livelihood.
Amid rising grievances, villagers have launched protests, demanding immediate action from NTPC to mitigate pollution and safeguard their well-being. Protesters assert that the chemical waste not only threatens the environment but poses a direct risk to public safety.
The residents have issued a stern ultimatum, warning NTPC that if corrective measures are not implemented promptly, they will take matters into their own hands by shutting down the discharge pipelines.
The community insists on accountability from NTPC to prevent further environmental degradation and to restore normalcy in the region.
