Boat capsizes along Assam-Bangladesh border, minor dead, 2 others missing

A tragic boat accident occurred at Alga in Nepur along the Indo-Bangladesh border during a storm, resulting in the loss of life and the disappearance of two individuals. The body of a child has been recovered, while two others remain missing. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) initiated a rescue operation early this morning.

Yesterday, around 5 pm, a boat accident claimed the life of a child and left two others missing at Alga in Nepure, located within the Sukhsar police station area in South Salmara Mankachar district.

Earlier, on Sunday, a mechanised boat carrying 18 passengers from Hatshingimari Kokradanga departed for Alga Char in Nepur. However, the boat encountered a sudden storm near Alga in Nepur, resulting in the accident.

Three individuals, including two children, went missing in the Brahmaputra River as a result of the mishap, while the remaining passengers managed to escape by swimming to safety.

Local residents immediately initiated rescue efforts, leading to the retrieval of Shamim Hussain, a 4-year-old boy, who unfortunately succumbed due to the lack of medical facilities on the char.

Kovad Hussain (65) and Ismail Hussain (8) remain unaccounted for, prompting the Hatshingimari SDRF to commence rescue operations today.

Local authorities, including Sukhsar police and the Border Security Force (BSF), have been deployed to the scene. The revenue circle officer of Mankachar is expected to arrive shortly. Sukhsar police have made arrangements for the post-mortem examination of the deceased child.
