Brahmaputra water level rises after heavy rain in Assam

The Brahmaputra River and several of its tributaries have surged past danger levels following continuous rainfall over the past few days, severely impacting multiple regions in Assam and neighboring states. The Kopili, Barak, Katakhal, and Kushiyara Rivers have all risen above their danger marks, exacerbating the flood situation.

The floods have affected 309 villages across 21 revenue circles in 14 districts: Tamulpur, Bongaigaon, Karimganj, Lakhimpur, Udalguri, Darrang, Dhemaji, Nagaon, Hojai, Chirang, Barpeta, Baksa, Nalbari, and Goalpara. Among these, Karimganj remains the hardest hit, with 95,315 people impacted by floodwaters. Nagaon follows with 4,982 affected individuals, Dhemaji with 3,621, and Barpeta with 1,109 residents suffering from the inundation.

The Kopili River, particularly near Kampur, is flowing dangerously high, submerging approximately 1005.7 hectares of cropland. Overall, 3,168 individuals have sought refuge in 14 relief camps and centers, as the floodwaters have wreaked havoc on both people and property. The disaster has also affected 62,173 animals, including livestock and poultry, with 21 large animals reportedly washed away in Dhemaji district.

Rescue operations are underway, with efforts led by local residents, civil defense personnel, trained volunteers, and local authorities. So far, 72 people and five animals have been evacuated by boats, primarily in Karimganj district. The government and relief agencies continue to monitor the situation, providing essential aid to those affected and working to mitigate the ongoing crisis.
