"Dhakka marke bhagayenge...": Himanta Biswa Sarma pledges to push back Bangladeshis

Assam Chief Minister and Jharkhand co-election in-charge Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Friday, September 27, that the NRC will be enforced. He stated that individuals whose names are excluded from the list will be deported to Bangladesh.

Addressing concerns about demographic shifts in Jharkhand, Sarma asserted, “NRC will be carried out, and those who are not listed will be pushed to Bangladesh. This is going to be our policy moving forward.”

However, the Assam CM reassured that due legal procedures would be followed. “Everyone will have the opportunity to present their case when the NRC process begins. But if one fails to prove their Indian citizenship, they will be deported to Bangladesh through legal channels,” Sarma added.

Sarma also shed light on the situation in Assam, revealing that 14 lakh people have been identified as prima facie non-citizens. “One phase of the process is already complete in Assam. We have identified 14 lakh people and have requested the Supreme Court to permit us to conduct another revision. Should this approval be granted, that number could rise significantly,” the CM explained.

Earlier this month, CM Sarma announced the introduction of stricter procedures for obtaining Aadhaar cards in Assam starting from October 1. He warned that individuals who fail to participate in the NRC process will not be eligible for Aadhaar under the new rules.

The Assam government has already issued a directive aimed at intensifying efforts to identify illegal immigrants across its international borders. The memorandum underscores the state’s commitment to fortifying border security and ensuring the proper implementation of the NRC.
