Flood cripples Assam’s Gohpur as rising flood water breaks embankment, inundates village

Flood waters of Chatrang river has inundated several parts of Assam’s Gohpur as torrential rains continue to pound the region.

The rising floodwaters of Chatrang River at Ward No 7 have damaged the embankment, putting the residents in misery.

Angered at the administration for not paying attention towards repeated requests for the repair of the embankment, one of the resident while speaking to the media said, “The work done by the contractors here are not at all upto mark. We are also not satisfied by the initiatives taken by the water resources department. The manner in which the barricades needed to be set up, are not all implemented as envisioned. You can see, how people are trying to stop the flood waters from entering the village by erecting plyboards. The repair work is also half finished”

As per sources, around Rs 15 crore was allocated in the name of construction of guard walls and embankments. Yet, the condition of the embankments reveals another side of the story. The contractor involved in the work have allegedly left the midway.

As a result, the rising waters of the Chitrang River has inundated several parts, with huge expanse of agricultural fields damaged.

With monsoon just entering the state, residents are worried of the coming days as the river water continue to rise due to the torrential rains.
