Gauhati University students clash during cultural evening, journalists harassed

A clash broke out among students and turned violent, leading to the event’s cancellation by university authorities at Gauhati University. The incident, which occurred late at night, also saw misbehavior towards journalists who arrived at the scene to report on the situation.

According to reports, the altercation took place within the university premises near RCC2 Hostel. As soon as the news spread, journalists on night duty reached the campus after obtaining permission from security personnel at the main gate. While attempting to gather details about the incident, they parked their vehicle near the hostel, where a group of intoxicated students allegedly confronted them.

Eyewitnesses stated that the group, led by research scholar Neep Jyoti Kalita, misbehaved with the journalists, used abusive language, and even threatened them. The students reportedly prevented the journalists from leaving by blocking their vehicle. Sources revealed that Kalita, who was allegedly intoxicated at the time, is associated with a student organization and is related to former MLA Satyabrata Kalita.

Following the disturbance, security personnel intervened to prevent further escalation. However, the situation raised concerns over campus safety and the behavior of certain students during events. The university authorities are expected to review the incident and take necessary action.
