Tension prevailed after several unauthorised businesses and encroachments at Forest Gate, Guwahati, allegedly constructed on land owned by Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), were evicted on Tuesday in an administrative operation.
As per sources, the eviction drive was conducted by Guwahati Municipal Corporation at Noonmati's Forest Gate, resulting in the removal of these unlawful establishments.
The evictees, however, claimed they received no prior notice, leaving them unsupported. The action has sparked severe criticism from local residents, creating a tense environment in the area.
Earlier in January, in Goalpara, Assam, an elderly man named Boyat Ali, 55, reportedly died due to extreme cold post eviction. Boyat was a resident of the evicted Pancharatna NC village in Goalpara.
On January 10, about 50 families in the Pancharatna Reserve Forest area were rendered homeless after an eviction drive against illegal encroachers. Reports suggest these families had unlawfully occupied the forest land and built homes and other illegal structures.
