The aftermath of the torrential rain that hit Guwahati on August 5 has left residents grappling with a myriad of issues. Expressing their agitation, several people have called on the state government for immediate action and improvement.
The recent flash flood, which wreaked havoc in the city, has exposed several shortcomings in the city's infrastructure. From poor drainage systems and frequent power outages to the loss of livelihoods and inadequate public transport management, the concerns are many and pressing.
Many residents highlighted the issue of inadequately cleared drains, which resulted in severe flash floods following each rainfall in the city.
WATCH THE RESIDENTS SPEAK:
A local resident, speaking to India Today NE, highlighted the severe impact of waterlogging on daily commutes. "Due to the waterlogged streets, it took me three extra hours to reach home. Normally, it takes just half an hour," she said, citing the minimal availability of public transport during the flooding.
Another resident criticised MLA Atul Bora, who oversees the Dispur constituency, for his lack of action in addressing the area's issues. "Earlier, the situation was better. Since Bora took charge, we've faced severe waterlogging in Hatigaon," he claimed.
The frustration extends beyond individual grievances. Residents are urging Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to personally review the situation. They allege that lower-ranking officials are not fulfilling their duties diligently.
An elderly woman expressed her heartbreak over not being able to meet her daughter due to the flooded streets.
In a more devastating account, a local electronics business owner lamented the loss of Rs 19 lakh after floodwaters damaged all his machinery. "Everything is ruined," he said, clearly distressed.
As Guwahati struggles to recover from the recent deluge, the residents' voices highlight the urgent need for effective disaster management and robust infrastructure development.
