Himanata Biswa Sarma to introduce mandatory security clearance for new medical and nursing colleges

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that a new law will be introduced requiring security clearance for anyone opening nursing, medical, or dental colleges.

Speaking to the media, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "A new law will be introduced in the Cabinet that going forward anyone opting to open nursing, medical, or dental college will require security clearance.  Till now there was no security clearance in our system...but the Central government takes a report from IB before giving any clearance and in Assam, we are incorporating the clause in two-three months."

Further CM Sarma asserted that many establishments from Kerala are trying to set up institutions in Barak Valley and Barpeta, however, the verification of the same looks suspicious, according to the SB report, hence bringing security clearance.

Taking to his X handle, the CM wrote, "Some institutions from Kerala are keen to open universities in the Muslim-majority areas of Assam. Congress had a policy of easily allowing any rich institution to open a university. From now on, our government will allow opening of universities only after getting Security Clearance from the Special Branch."

Earlier, a private university in Meghalaya was blamed for the massive flooding in Guwahati, by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

He called the university's gates with three domes "Mecca-like" and blamed such institutions for "destroying the education system".

The institute caught in the eye of the storm is the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM), located in Meghalaya's Ri-Bhoi district, just across Assam's border.

"It’s embarrassing to go there, you have to go under ‘Mecca’. What we are saying is that there should be a namghar (traditional Assamese place of worship), there also. ‘Mecca-Medina’, a church. Make all threeâ€æ They have kept a ‘Mecca’ there. Let them make a namghar, make a church. We will walk under all three, why will we walk under just one,” Sarma said.
