Himanta Biswa Sarma appeals for Majuli's inclusion in UNESCO World Heritage Site list

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has urged the Union Government to advocate for the inclusion of Majuli, the world's largest river island, in the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage Site list.

Speaking at the International Tourism Mart currently underway in Kaziranga, on November 27, CM Sarma stated, "Going ahead I would request India's Union Minister of Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat to acknowledge Mujuli's nomination into the UNESCO world heritage site list."

Majuli, nestled on the mighty Brahmaputra River, is renowned for its monasteries or satras, established by the 15th-century saint-scholar Srimanta Sankardeva. The island is also home to diverse tribal communities and unique agricultural practices, embodying a harmonious coexistence with nature.

Over the years, Majuli has faced challenges from river erosion, climate change, and infrastructure limitations.

Inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage list could bring increased international attention and resources for the preservation of its fragile ecosystem and rich cultural legacy.

This appeal follows a series of steps taken by the Assam Government to enhance Majuli's prominence, including improved connectivity, eco-tourism initiatives, and sustainable development projects.

Sarma expressed confidence that the Union Government would champion Majuli's cause on global platforms, further boosting India's cultural representation on UNESCO's esteemed list.

Majuli's potential inscription would mark a significant milestone for Assam, joining the ranks of other iconic Indian sites recognized by UNESCO for their universal value.
