Himanta Biswa Sarma awaits Waqf Amendment Bill, calls it a step towards justice for Muslim women

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has expressed anticipation for the Waqf Amendment Bill, describing it as a step towards justice for Muslim women. 

He stated that the bill aims to address issues concerning Muslim women's rights and bring necessary reforms.

Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that he has not yet seen the draft or amendment bill regarding the waqf, but he is aware through media reports that it will be amended. 

He mentioned that if the amendment is true, it will be a long-standing requirement that brings justice to Muslim women.

Speaking to the media, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "As of now I have not seen the draft/amendment bill, only I know that the waqf bill will be amended that too in media and if it is true then it is a long-standing requirement and that reform will give a lot of justice to the Muslim women and I think this is one step which will be considered for giving justice to the Muslim women and also it will ensure that the waqf property goes to whom it should go."

Earlier on August 4, Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a significant policy change regarding inter-religion land transfers during the State Executive meeting of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra in Guwahati.

Addressing the gathering, Sarma stated, “Earlier, inter-religion land transfers happened freely. Hindus used to buy land from Muslims, and Muslims used to buy land from Hindus. We cannot stop the buying or selling of land. 

However, the Assam government has now decided that for a Hindu's land to be bought by a Muslim, and vice versa, the Chief Minister's approval will be required. Without the Chief Minister's approval, no land buying or selling between Hindus and Muslims will take place.”
