Himanta Biswa Sarma : I won't let Assam become a land of 'Miyas'

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on August 27 that he would not let 'Miya' Muslims take over Assam. Sarma said this during a session in the state assembly when he was responding to adjournment motions moved by opposition parties over the law and order situation in the aftermath of the rape of a 14-year-old girl in Nagaon on August 22.

Countering the opposition leaders' arguments over changes in the state's demography, Sarma said, "Today, knowingly or unknowingly, our Jania Assembly constituency MLA Rafiqul Islam and opposition leader Debabrata Saikia made statements as if people from lower Assam would migrate to Upper Assam.". "Why should they relocate? Does this mean the entire state will be ruled by 'Miya' Muslims?

Sarma said, "I will not allow Assam to become a land of Miyas. We will never allow it."
