Himanta Biswa Sarma: Journalists should mention their name at press conferences for security and transparency

Assam Chief Minister defended the practice of journalists introducing themselves by name before asking any questions at press conferences. He told reporters, "The protocol is necessary both from the point of view of security and profession.".

Speaking to reporters, Sarma replied to criticisms over the need for journalists to mention their names in view of the comments some intellectuals made regarding this practice as an intrusion on personal rights. Sarma said, "In Assam, if one refers to names like Shahjahan or Shah Jalal, some intellectuals play the 'victim card.' If my name is Shah Jalal, I should proudly say Shah Jalal, as this is the name given by my parents. There is nothing wrong with stating your name."

Sarma said, "In Delhi, one has to introduce oneself before asking questions. It's done for transparency and security management. Unless the I&PR is registered, there is always a question of security concern. One needs to know who is asking questions."

The Chief Minister also referred to the need for adherence to this norm, clarifying that it had kept issues in a better order and clarity while in interaction with the press. "Whether the press club supports me or not is a different issue, but why should someone be granted the exemption from identifying oneself if he is asking a question?" he said.
