Himanta Biswa Sarma led government borrowed Rs 2250 crores in 22 days: Assam Congress

The Congress party has raised concerns over the borrowing practices of the Assam government, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

According to Congress, the state government borrowed a substantial sum of Rs 2,250 crore within just 22 days. This information was shared by the party during a recent press briefing.

Addressing the media in Bongaigaon today, Congress president Bhupen Borah said, "You will be surprised to know in the last 22 days (September 17 to October 8), Himanta Biswa Sarma led government has borrowed Rs 2250 crores in 22 days."

Further Borah claimed that from 1947 to 2016 Assam government took a loan of 41 thousand nine hundred 64 crores and the Sonowal-led BJP government took a loan of 66 thousand crores.

The Congress has criticised the rapid pace of borrowing, questioning the financial management and priorities of the state government.

They have urged the government to provide clarity on how these funds are being utilised and the implications for the state's fiscal health.

In response, the Assam government has not yet issued a statement addressing the concerns raised by the Congress. Observers are keen to see if there will be any official clarification or rebuttal from the Chief Minister's office regarding the borrowing spree.
