Himanta Biswa Sarma to unveil 'white paper' on demographic shifts by mid-2025

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday, August 28, that a white paper on demographic changes in the state would be released by April-May next year, highlighting the increase in the Muslim population and the decrease in the Hindu population.

He stated that this initiative aims to help people understand the challenges.

“...will bring out a comprehensive white paper on how the number of Muslims is increasing in the area with the Hindu majority...there is no report of communal violence and the two communities are living peacefully. But a reverse situation is happening on the other front,” he said.

“The white paper will have interesting facts. You will be surprised at the changes that are taking place. Demographic changes have taken place in 19,000 out of 28,000 polling booths in the state, " added CM Sarma.

Sarma assured that there is no report of communal violence and that the two communities are living peacefully, but noted that significant demographic changes are occurring.

He mentioned that these changes have affected 19,000 out of 28,000 polling booths in Assam. As an example, he cited Kachari Gaon in Dhing, where no members of the Kachari community currently reside.

The Chief Minister, who has faced accusations of deepening religious divides, insisted that his efforts are focused on securing communal harmony and peace. He added that the white paper would contain interesting facts and surprise the public with the extent of the changes.

Sarma also mentioned that the state government would provide evidence of demographic changes in 23,000 out of 28,000 polling booths in Assam.
