Protesters took to the streets in Thoubal district today, November 21 condemning the brutal killing of six hostages, including women and children, from Jiribam.
The demonstration, which saw significant participation, called for justice while voicing strong opposition to the reimposition of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in six designated police station areas.
Chants demanding an end to the violence and AFSPA’s removal filled the air, with slogans such as “Stop killing women and children” and “End terrorism now.” Protesters carried banners featuring images of past victims of AFSPA, including Thangjam Manorama and Rose Ningsen, symbolizing their ongoing fight against what they termed systemic injustices.
Expressing deep sorrow, one protester condemned the alleged killing of the six Meitei hostages by Kuki militants, blaming the authorities' inaction for the tragic loss. “For the last 18 months, the state has endured immense suffering. Instead of alleviating the crisis, the situation has worsened, yet the central government continues to neglect meaningful resolution,” she said.
The protesters also strongly criticized the reimposition of AFSPA, arguing it would only exacerbate the ongoing conflict. “Rather than implementing measures to address the crisis, the government is bringing back AFSPA, which is unjustifiable and will further aggravate tensions,” she added.
Another major concern raised was the arrest of village defense volunteers by security forces. Protesters argued that these volunteers play a critical role in safeguarding villages from armed Kuki militants, especially when official security forces have failed to ensure protection effectively.
The protest concluded with an urgent appeal to the central government to prioritize peacebuilding and justice, emphasizing the need for immediate action to restore stability in the state.
