A large-scale protest rally was held today, December 12 in Golakganj as the All Koch Rajbongshi Students Union (AKRASU), led by its West Dhubri district unit, renewed demands for the tribal status of the Koch Rajbanshi community and the creation of a separate Kamatapur state.
Addressing the gathering, Syam Koch, a key leader belonging from the Koch Rajbongshi community warned of severe consequences if the government fails to address their grievances. “If our demands are ignored, thousands of Koch Rajbanshi individuals are prepared to retreat to the jungles,” he declared, reflecting the mounting frustration within the community.
The rally saw around 500 men and women marching from the Jagmohan Bidyapith playground through Golakganj’s streets, chanting anti-government slogans such as "Murdabad BJP." Protesters cautioned the government to heed their demands before the 2026 assembly elections.
Despite a heavy police presence, the protest remained peaceful. The demonstrators reiterated their long-standing call for tribalization, emphasizing that a separate Kamatapur state is crucial for preserving their identity, culture, and development.
Leaders issued a stern warning that the movement would intensify if their demands remain unmet. “This is just the beginning. Our fight will grow stronger in the coming months,” one of the protest leaders asserted.
