Pro-Khalistani leader Amritpal Singh's wife and lawyer visit him at Assam jail; calls for immediate release

The wife and legal counsel of Amritpal Singh, elected as Member of Parliament from the Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha constituency in Punjab, visited him at Dibrugarh Jail, Assam following his electoral victory on June 4.

Amritpal Singh, the detained leader of 'Waris Punjab De,' was joined by his lawyer, Rajdev Singh Khalsa, who spoke to the media about their next steps. "The further strategy is of getting bail. The government has to release him, they have no alternative," Khalsa asserted. He emphasized Singh's commitment to eradicating drug use in Punjab, stating, "Amritpal Singh was making Punjab drug-free... The people have approved that his arrest was illegal and immoral."

The visit comes amid growing calls for Singh's release, with his supporters claiming his detention is unjust and contrary to the will of the electorate.

Despite being incarcerated, Khalistani leader Amritpal Singh secured a decisive victory in Punjab's Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha seat, winning by a margin of 197,120 votes against Congress candidate Kulbir Singh Zira, as confirmed by the Election Commission on Tuesday, June 4.

Amritpal Singh, who campaigned from his jail cell in Assam, garnered 404,430 votes, significantly outpacing Zira, who received 207,310 votes. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate, Laljit Singh Bhullar, finished third with 194,836 votes.

Singh, the head of 'Waris Punjab De,' was arrested last year during a major crackdown and is currently detained under the National Security Act (NSA) in Dibrugarh Jail, Assam.

In light of his victory, the Returning Officer for the Khadoor Sahib constituency issued Amritpal Singh's election certificate to his family members, marking a significant political triumph despite his ongoing imprisonment.
