Sarbananda Sonowal hails inclusion of Assam's 'Moidams' in UNESCO World Heritage list

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has attributed the recognition of Assam's Charaideo Moidams as 'Cultural Property' on the UNESCO World Heritage list to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Speaking to reporters, Sonowal said that the addition of Charaideo Moidams to UNESCO's World Heritage list is a big recognition for Assam.

He said, "Assam's Charaideo Moidams has been added to UNESCO World Heritage list as 'Cultural Property'. It is a big recognition for us. I thank PM Modi on behalf of the people of Northeast."

Furthermore, the Union Minister exalted PM Modi's support to Assam and the entire Northeastern region.

He said, "This again proves that PM Modi continues to serve Assam and Northeast and as a result, we got a chance to gain recognition across the world."

Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also thanked the Ahom community and the Assam government for the milestone achievement. He also extended appreciation towards the people of Assam.

The mound-burial system of the Ahom dynasty in Assam -- 'Moidams' -- was on July 26 included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, making it the first cultural property from the Northeast to get the coveted tag.

The decision was taken during the ongoing 46th session of the World Heritage Committee (WHC) being held in India.

'Moidams' was submitted as India's nomination for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List for the year 2023-24.
