Sarbananda Sonowal takes oath as Union Cabinet Minister

Sarbananda Sonowal, a senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Chief Minister of Assam, was officially sworn in as a Union Cabinet Minister today. Sonowal, who served as the Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways in the outgoing Lok Sabha, will continue his tenure in the House of the People as the MP-elect from Dibrugarh, maintaining his significant role in the ministerial council.

Sonowal's political career began with his first Lok Sabha election in 2004, where he ran as a candidate for the Asom Gana Parishad and defeated former Union Minister Paban Singh Ghatowar in Dibrugarh. He later joined the BJP in 2011 and was re-elected to the Lok Sabha in 2014 from Lakhimpur.

Starting as a student leader in 1992, Sonowal eventually ascended to the top administrative position in Assam, serving as the state's Chief Minister from 2016 to 2021, before his return to Delhi. His extensive experience and leadership in both state and central roles are expected to significantly influence his contributions in the Union Cabinet.
