Snake-bitten woman in Assam's flood-hit area carried to hospital on shoulders

Anawara Khatun, a resident of Hasantuk in Rangia, Assam, is in critical condition after being bitten by a snake that emerged due to severe flooding in the region.

The incident occurred on Wednesday (June 20) during the daytime, highlighting the dire situation faced by locals as incessant rains have caused widespread flooding, disrupting daily life and emergency services.

Immediate efforts to transport Khatun to the hospital were thwarted by the floodwaters, which have inundated both main roads and bylanes, making vehicular travel impossible.

With no boats available, several locals took it upon themselves to carry Khatun on their shoulders through the floodwaters to reach medical help.

Upon finally arriving at the hospital, Khatun's treatment commenced, narrowly averting a fatal outcome.

Medical experts emphasize the importance of initiating treatment within the first hour after a snakebite, a critical window that was jeopardized due to the flooding.

The flooding in Hasantuk, caused by continuous rainfall over the past few days, has severely impacted the region. Emergency health services and other essential communications have been severely disrupted.

Residents express frustration and blame the government and local administration for their inability to provide adequate support and resources during this crisis.
