Unrest gripped Assam's Gossaigaon after the death of a young man allegedly due to police brutality on September 15.
The deceased, identified as Bappi Dey, 35, was the son of the late Surya Dey and a resident of Pal Para in Gosaigaon Sadar town.
The incident has sparked outrage among the local community, who are demanding answers and justice for what they perceive as an unwarranted use of force by law enforcement.
According to initial reports, Bappi Dey had been suffering from a mental disorder. The situation escalated earlier this afternoon when he was taken into custody by the police. The arrest followed an incident on College Road in Gosaigaon Sadar town, where Bappi allegedly caused damage to a man's vehicle. Eyewitness accounts suggest that the police moved quickly to detain him, transporting him to the local police station soon after.

Tragically, Bappi Dey died shortly after being brought to the station. While the exact circumstances of his death remain unclear, accusations are circulating that excessive force by the police may have contributed to the fatal outcome. This has intensified the already tense atmosphere in Gosaigaon, with residents calling for a thorough investigation into the incident and the handling of individuals with mental health challenges by the police.
Local authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the incident, but pressure is mounting for a transparent inquiry.
