Why Himanta Biswa Sarma links BJP's Jorhat LS defeat to the crackdown on drunk driving

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has addressed concerns regarding the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) performance in the Jorhat Lok Sabha seat.

He remarked that some individuals believe the party's loss in the Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency was due to the government's strict enforcement of traffic laws, particularly against drunk driving and helmetless riding.

Speaking at a press conference after chairing the Assam Cabinet meeting at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, Dibrugarh, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed concerns surrounding the government’s strict enforcement of traffic regulations, including measures against drunk driving and helmetless riding.

Highlighting the issue, Sarma stated, "I have earlier taken several stringent actions against drunk driving, helmetless riding, and other violations. But now people say that the reason we (BJP) lost the Jorhat Lok Sabha seat is also because of being extra strict against drink and driving."

The Chief Minister expressed his dilemma, adding, "You only tell me what to do. We are caught from both sides."

While reiterating the importance of road safety and adherence to traffic rules, Sarma acknowledged the need to balance enforcement with public sentiment.

"Our focus remains on saving lives and ensuring safety, and I have video-conferenced with all DTOs and DCs so that the year-end goes well," he said.

The Chief Minister’s comments come amid discussions about the political impact of governance measures and their perception among voters. The government, however, remains committed to its stance on promoting safety and discipline on Assam’s roads.
