A significant controversy has erupted after the state government of Assam tabled the Assam Repealing Bill, 2024 on Thursday, August 29.
Dr. Rafiqul Islam, a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) representing the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), voiced strong objections to the bill, which seeks to repeal the Assam Muslim Marriages and Divorces Registration Act of 1935.
Dr. Islam expressed concerns over the implications of the bill, emphasizing that his party has submitted an amendment to challenge the proposed repeal. "We have demanded the removal of the term 'repeal' from the bill," he stated. Dr. Islam questioned the state government's authority in regulating the marriage practices of Muslim women, highlighting the existence of personal laws that govern such matters.

"Our Chief Minister's agenda seems to be focused on targeting a particular community," Dr. Islam remarked, alluding to what he perceives as an infringement on the rights granted to communities under personal laws. He further cautioned that if the bill is passed in its current form, the AIUDF is prepared to seek judicial intervention to protect the rights of the affected community.
The discussion on the bill is expected to take place today, with lawmakers debating its potential impact and the broader implications for the state's Muslim population.
