'Will eat sweets if they aren't poisoned': Assam Congress leader Debabrata Saikia on Ajmal's offer

Assam Congress leader Debabrata Saikia on May 25 sarcastically responded to All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal's sweets offer post announcement of poll results on June 4

Saikia made a pointed remark against Ajmal while speaking to the media and said, "I will eat sweets, as long as they are not poisoned".

Reflecting on past grievances, Saikia noted, "Badruddin Ajmal left us and made unforgivable statements against us. Sweets are a nice gesture, and we have no objection to receiving them. However, the remarks he made in 2021 deeply hurt us."

Saikia's comments came after Ajmal's announcement that he would celebrate the post-election period by offering sweets to the Congress.

Assam Congress had ejected the minority-based AIUDF from the 'Mahajot' or opposition grand alliance that was formed ahead of the 2021 State election to prevent the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from returning to power.

Since then, both the parties were involved in constant mud slinging, trying to pull down each other with numerous accusations.
