NEW DELHI: A SpiceJet flight carrying a contingent of the Indian boxing team, including Mary Kom, announced a fuel emergency landing at Dubai International Airport today.

According to reports, the fuel emergency landing report was filed after uncertainty arose about the flight's planned landing.

The aircraft's pilots informed ATC of a fuel shortage, and the plane was able to land after a 30-minute delay.

The Indian boxing team reached Dubai to compete in the Asian Boxing Championships.

"There was some doubt about the trip approval letter, which was eventually resolved thanks to the Indian Embassy's involvement in the UAE. While the flight took a long time to arrive, the boxers have now arrived at their hotel,"a source close to the team said.

The Indian Boxing Federation released a statement thanking the Indian ambassador to the UAE for his assistance but did not elaborate on what caused the flight's delay in landing.

The tournament begins on Monday, with the draws scheduled for Sunday.

Given the COVID-19 restrictions in effect around the world, it is the boxers' only big competition until the July-August Olympics.

Apart from India, countries competing at the continental showpiece include Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Kyrgyzstan, the Philippines, and Uzbekistan.
