A resolution was passed the Manipur Assembly today to rename the Imphal International Airport, the only airport in the Northeastern State, as Bir Tikendrajit International Airport, after the famous Manipuri war hero.
Meanwhile, the Manipur administration also seeks to give the airport a major facelift. The work that is required to develop the Imphal airport to the level of an ‘international airport’ will begin from October 2 this year. The major facelift is expected to be completed within 3 years.
Disclosing this during a press conference recently at the Imphal airport, Airport Authority of India regional executive director (Northeast region) Sanjeep Jindal said that a regional review meeting on issues and inconveniences currently faced at Imphal airport and to develop the airport to international level was held recently.
Apart from this, issues relating to Imphal airport were discussed with the state chief secretary after holding meetings and requisite ground surveys for infrastructure development at the airport has been completed and all related works would begin from October 2 this year.
According to Sanjeep Jindal, Rs 725 crore will be invested for infrastructure development at Imphal airport for making it at par with other international airports.
The design of the project is being undertaken by M/s GMB Architects of Australia, while Kochi based M/s Kitco Limited is the lead consultant and M/s Sthapati Associates sub-consultant for interior-landscape-fastcade-airport system.
The project got approval on December 2, 2018 while concept design and preliminary drawing of the project conducted after site survey and soil investigation was approved on April 8 this year, he added.
