Nagaland CM condoles former Nagaland chief Secretary A.M Gokhale's demise

KOHIMA: Padma Shri Achyut Madhav Gokhale, the former chief secretary of Nagaland also the secretary to the government of India at the ministry of non-conventional energy sources, and retired Indian civil servant had passed away this morning.

Chief minister Neiphiu Rio, deputy chief minister, Y Patton, and many others have condoled the demise of Gokhale.

Extending his deepest condolences CM Rio wrote on Twitter, ‘I am deeply grieved at hearing the news of the passing away of Padma Shri A.M. Gokhale, former chief secretary of Nagaland today morning’. It’s a loss which is not limited to his immediate family members but all of us in Nagaland.”

He also prayed for Gokhale’s family to God Almighty for the strength to bear this irreversible loss.

“The demise of Padma Shri A.M. Gokhale, IAS (Retd), former Chief Secretary of Nagaland is deeply saddening. He's remembered as a reformer who transformed Nagaland through his visions for people and brilliant ideas. My condolences to the bereaved family. May his soul rest in peace,” deputy chief minister and BJP leader Y Patton tweeted.

Advisor AH&VS, R Khing wrote, “Sad to learn about the demise of former Chief Secretary #Nagaland Shri A.M.Gokhale. An outstanding civil servant & Padmashri awardee, his contribution to strengthen VDBs will be remembered May his soul RIP. Condolences to the bereaved family.”

The 75-year-old was born on January 3, 1946.

Gokhale graduated in Physics from the University of Mumbai in 1965.

He joined the Indian Administrative Service from the Nagaland cadre in 1968 and worked in various government offices until his retirement in January 2006.

A.M. Gokhale served as assistant commissioner, Mokokchung, Sub Divisional Officer, Mon, Deputy Commissioner, Phek, Deputy Commissioner, Mokokchung, Secretary, Rural Development, Secretary, Education, Director, Administrative Training Institute, Secretary, Industries, and Development Commissioner for the Government of Nagaland from 1974 to 1987.

He worked as a joint secretary in the ministry of rural development for the government of India from 1987 to 1992. The Jawahar Rozgar Yojana was launched during this period.

He was awarded the Padmashri in January 1990 for his work on village development Boards and the role that this work played in the formation of the Jawahar Rozgar Yojana.

Gokhale served as agricultural production commissioner, resident commissioner, and finally chief secretary for the government of Nagaland between 1992 to 2000.
