Paapa Essiedu in talks to play Severus Snape in Harry Potter reboot

British actor Paapa Essiedu is reportedly in discussions to take on the iconic role of Professor Severus Snape in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series adaptation. Known for his standout performance in HBO's "I May Destroy You", Essiedu’s potential casting has already sparked excitement among fans eager to see fresh takes on JK Rowling's beloved characters.  

The role of Snape, famously portrayed by the late Alan Rickman in the original Warner Bros films, is one of the franchise's most complex. The character, with his sharp wit, secret loyalties, and tragic backstory, remains pivotal to the Harry Potter narrative. While no official confirmation has been made, reportedly Essiedu is the frontrunner for the part.  

Essiedu has built an impressive resume, with roles in shows like Anne Boleyn, Gangs of London, and Black Mirror*, as well as films such as Murder on the Orient Express and Men. His involvement in the Harry Potter series would mark another milestone in his career.  

The series, set to debut in 2026, promises a fresh take on Rowling’s books with a new cast. Earlier reports hinted that Oscar-winner Mark Rylance is in talks to play Albus Dumbledore, while Warner Bros launched an open casting call for child actors to play Harry, Hermione, and Ron, suggesting the leads will be newcomers.  

HBO describes the reboot as a "faithful adaptation" of the books, with Rowling serving as an executive producer. Francesca Gardiner will act as showrunner, and Mark Mylod (Succession, Game of Thrones) is attached to direct several episodes.  

The series aims to bring Harry Potter’s magical world to a new generation while keeping the original films at the heart of the franchise. Fans will have to wait to see if Essiedu officially joins the wizarding world as the enigmatic Severus Snape.
