In a candid conversation on the fifth episode of 'Newsmakers In The House' with IndiaTodayNE, acclaimed actor Adil Hussain opened up about his regret in being part of the controversial film Kabir Singh. Directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the film has drawn significant criticism for its portrayal of toxic masculinity.
Hussain addressed the director's reaction to his earlier comments, where Vanga had seemingly downplayed the actor's filmography.
"I can't believe he actually counted my films. Honestly, I don't know what to say to that. If someone like Mira Nair is considered less famous than him, then I’m speechless. 'Ang Lee' won an Oscar even before 'Life of Pi,' and he's a legend. So, god bless Sandeep Reddy Vanga for taking the time to count the films I've done. I understand he's upset about what he said, but I've never blamed him. I've always taken full responsibility—it's my fault for not reading the script. I could give you 100 reasons why I didn't, but that doesn't matter. The fault is mine. I only read my scenes and agreed to the film, and when I finally watched it, I realized I had made a big blunder", Hussain said.
During an interview on the YouTube channel AP Podcast, Adil revealed that he accepted the role in Kabir Singh without reading the screenplay. He stated, “That’s the only film in my life that I have taken on without reading the script or watching the original movie it was based on.”
After the film's premiere, Adil admitted that he walked out of the cinema just 20 minutes into the screening.
Adil continued, "And it celebrates it, it glorifies it, and it should not be glorified."
In response to Adil's criticism of Kabir Singh, director Sandeep Reddy Vanga publicly called him out, tweeting, "Your 'belief' in 30 art films didn’t bring you as much recognition as your 'regret' of 1 BLOCKBUSTER film did. I regret casting you, knowing that your greed is bigger than your passion. I’ll save you from the shame by replacing your face with AI. Now, smile properly”.
