President suspends Manipur University VC Adya Prasad Pandey

Imphal (Manipur), September 18, 2018:

Manipur University Vice Chancellor Prof Adya Prasad Pandey has been placed under suspension by the President of India.

An order by the Ministry of Human Resources Development said, “The President of India in his capacity as Visitor of Manipur University on consideration of material on record and taking the account volatile law and order situation on the campus of Manipur University and in exercise of the powers conferred on him under provision of statute 13(1) of the statute of Manipur University Act , 2005 and with section 16 of the general Clause Act , 1897, is pleased to place Prof Adya Pandey, Vice Chancellor, under suspension with immediate effect and till completion of the enquiry and action to be taken thereon in the interest of justice for free and fair enquiry or till further order”.

The order was issued on September 17.

It may be mentioned the VC has been at loggerhead with the varsity community for over three months for its demand to sack him. Earlier, the associations of students, staffs and faculty of the university had staged a series of agitations against Pandey accusing him of siphoning off funds among others.
