India bloc Manipur unit demands laws to deal with issues of IDPs

India Bloc of Manipur Unit demanded to draft of a comprehensive law to deal with relief, rehabilitation and resettlement of internally displaced people.

Addressing to media during the press conference held today, the working president of the Manipur Press Congress Committee, Kh Devabrata said that the ongoing crisis has completed almost 15 months.

Though India has come across many riots like Gujarat Riot, Delhi Riot, and Sikh Riot. But among all such communal crises, the present crisis occurring in Manipur could be the most devastating and longest.

He continued and said that the majority of internally displaced people are still away from their hometowns and still take refuge in their homeland. It is reported that properties of IDPs have started selling and even bulldozed in some places. Such action is condemnable and authorities concerned should take adequate measures to prevent attacks on the properties of IDPS.

While urging state authorities to provide adequate compensation, he said that there is a need for specific laws to deal with relief, rehabilitation and resettlement so that not a single IDP doesn’t deny their compensatory rights.

Justice Gita Mittal's Committee of the Supreme Court to oversee the relief and rehabilitation of the victims of ethnic violence in Manipur has been extended for another six months. It would be unjust if the committee applied the relief policy adopted during the Gujarat Riot in 2002 or the Delhi Riot in 1984.

He urged the state government should frame a specific law or at least form a house committee of the Manipur Legislative Assembly to address the issues of IDPs.
