Kuki-Zo community protests 'forced normalization,' calls for political intervention in Manipur

Hundreds of members of the Kuki-Zo community convened at Gamgiphai to protest what they perceive as a renewed attempt by the state government of Manipur to breach buffer zones under the guise of normalizing the region. The gathering, marked by strong opposition, comes amidst escalating tensions and rising apprehensions over the state’s policies.  

The protests were triggered by an alleged move by the state government to operate the MST bus service along National Highway 2, traversing Kangpokpi, a region predominantly inhabited by the Kuki-Zo community. 

On December 24, 2023, a similar plan to introduce the MST bus service through the same route was thwarted by the community. 

Speaking at the protest, CoTU Spokesperson Ng. Lun Kipgen accused the state government of employing “bulldozed peace” tactics and imposing a forced normalization process. He alleged that such policies disregard the fragile political and security dynamics of the region, potentially exacerbating tensions.  

Kipgen further stressed the need for the Ministry of Home Affairs to engage in political dialogue, rather than relying on security forces to address the issue.  

The Kuki-Zo community reaffirmed its collective resolve, stating they will not tolerate any imposed peace or forced policies by the state government. Urging the central government to intervene, the protesters emphasized that genuine political engagement is essential to resolve the region’s enduring unrest.
