The All Manipur Bar Association (AMBA), one of India’s oldest legal bodies established in 1951, has submitted a memorandum to the Governor of Manipur, outlining four key demands. This call for action follows a resolution passed by the Association's Executive Committee and members, seeking immediate measures to uphold the rule of law in the state.
The AMBA denounced the heinous murder of two minors—an 8-month-old infant and an 8-year-old child—along with a woman, part of six abducted civilians whose bodies were recovered from the Barak River near Jirimukh, Jiribam. The group implicated suspected Kuki militants in the act and called for justice.
The association strongly opposed the recent extension of the “disturbed area” status under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) to certain parts of Manipur’s valley regions. They demanded its immediate withdrawal and urged military action against Kuki-Zo militants to curb violence.
AMBA emphasized the need to protect Article 21 of the Indian Constitution, ensuring the right to life and personal liberty in Manipur, calling for robust enforcement to maintain peace and safety for its residents.
The association requested that Kuki militant groups be officially recognized as terrorist organizations due to their violent acts, including civilian killings, armed conflicts, and threats to public order.
