Manipur celebrates 'darkest Diwali' amidst 180 days of violence

Manipur witnessed a sombre Diwali, marking six months of the deadly conflict. The usual festivities were eclipsed by the ongoing unrest, casting a shadow over the celebrations.

Notably, the crisis-hit state witnessed a muted festival of light "Diwali". Rather it was observed as a "dark Diwali" signifying state is still reeling in the dark phase.

For the first time in the history of Manipur, people refrain from celebrating Diwali. As a mark of respect to people who have lost their lives and share the pain of displaced people, people turn off lights for 10 minutes from 6 pm to 6.10 pm.

Unlike previous years, no houses or shops were decorated. People didn't burst a single firecracker. However, every family perform all the ritual ceremony.

Taking to his X handle, Manipur CM Biren Singh wrote, "Offering prayers on the auspicious occasion of Diwali to let the warm lights of truth and righteousness dispel all darkness, negativity from society and usher in an era of peace, prosperity and harmony in the state."
