Manipur erupts in protest, civil society organisations demand justice for human rights violations

Manipur witnessed a massive outpour of dissent on International Human Rights Day as lakhs of citizens staged a mass protest demanding justice and the repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), 1958. The protest, organized by prominent civil society organizations (CSOs), highlighted decades of alleged human rights violations and government inaction.

The rally commenced at THAU Ground in Imphal West and concluded at Khuman Lampak Main Stadium in Imphal East, covering a distance of approximately 10 kilometers. Protesters joined from roadside locations as the march advanced, creating a sea of voices united against AFSPA. The event was spearheaded by organizations including the All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (AMUCO), Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur (POIREI LEIMAROL), Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF), Centre for Human Rights (COHR), and All Manipur Women Voluntary Association (AMAWOVA).

Participants, including students and individuals from diverse backgrounds, condemned AFSPA as a "draconian act" that infringes on fundamental human rights. They also criticized the Government of India for failing to address ongoing conflicts in the state.

An emotional moment unfolded when a woman protester broke down while recounting decades of suffering caused by AFSPA. “Many victims of this act are still awaiting justice,” she said, expressing outrage over the reimposition of AFSPA in six police station areas. She further alleged a nexus between drug trafficking and certain communities, which has left many women widowed. “If the Government of India cannot safeguard our rights, then allow us self-determination,” she declared.

AMUCO President Pheiroijam Nando Luwang highlighted the suffering endured by Manipuris since the state’s merger with India. “The government’s neglect and repressive actions have only fueled the people's anguish. AFSPA has led to countless human rights abuses, including killings, rapes, and disappearances,” he stated, accusing the government of instigating violence through "sinister designs" and false promises.

He also raised the recent case of Laishram Kamalbabu, who has been missing for over two weeks from the campus of the 57 Mountain Division Army Camp at Leimakhong. "Despite the people’s demand for his safe release, the authorities have shown no accountability," he alleged.

Protesters carried banners reading Repeal AFSPA,” “Self-determination is our right,” “Stop killing innocent people,” and “Don’t obliterate Manipur.” The rally echoed with chants demanding an end to impunity and justice for the victims of human rights violations.

The protest concluded with calls for immediate government action to withdraw AFSPA and safeguard the fundamental rights of the people of Manipur. Organizers warned that continued neglect could further escalate demands for self-determination.
