Manipur commemorated Nupi Lal Numit, celebrating the extraordinary courage of women who fought against British oppression and artificial famine in the early 20th century.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh led state officials in paying tribute at the Nupi Lal Memorial Complex, highlighting the pivotal role of Manipuri women in social movements throughout history.
During the ceremony at GP Woman's College, Singh emphasised the remarkable resilience of Manipuri women, particularly their resistance during two significant historical movements in 1904 and 1939. He also recalled their crucial role in defeating Burmese invaders during the Seven Year Devastation period (1819-1826).
The chief minister acknowledged women's ongoing contributions across multiple sectors, including social, economic, artistic, and sports domains. He announced several welfare schemes designed to support women.
“Certain women welfare schemes including Ima Nongthangleima Yaipha Tengbang Scheme, providing financial assistance of Rs 500 per month to unemployed women who are above the age of 40 years was introduced. Ima markets had been constructed across every district of the State. Another 10 market sheds are in the pipeline for the inauguration. Financial assistance had also been given to women sportspersons,” he informed.
Addressing the current state of affairs, Singh assured ongoing efforts by state and central governments to resolve the present crisis, recognising its complex and fragile nature.
The event featured a dramatic performance by the Nupi Lal Memorial Association Drama Party, symbolising the historical narrative of women's resistance.
Other attendees included women legislators I Nalini Devi, SS Olish, and S Kebi, with Minister Th Bishwajit presiding over the function.
