Manipur: Kuki-Zo community demands Union Territory status as 'Christmas Gift' from Centre

Thousands of Kuki-Zo community members observed the 19th Remembrance Day in Saikul Hill Town, Kangpokpi, underlining their collective demand for political recognition. Organized by the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) in collaboration with Kuki Inpi Saikul Gamkai, KSO Saikul, and KWU Saikul, the event paid tribute to Kuki-Zo 'martyrs' who died amid ongoing regional conflicts.

Marking the occasion, schools, businesses, and other institutions across Sadar Hills were shut. However, vehicular movement continued to ensure essential activities were not disrupted.

The day also served as a platform for an emphatic political appeal. Leaders urged the Government of India to address the Kuki-Zo community's demand for Union Territory (UT) status with a legislature, framing their request as a potential "Christmas Gift."

CoTU General Secretary Lamminlun Singsit, in his speech, emphasized the urgency of the demand, stating, "This Remembrance Day is not just about honoring our 'martyrs' but also about asserting our resolve for political justice. We have waited long enough; it is time for the Centre to fulfill our rightful aspiration."

The call for UT status comes amid increasing frustration over delays in addressing the Kuki-Zo community's longstanding demands. Leaders reiterated their unity and determination, stressing that the time has come for tangible action from the Government.
