Manipur: Kuki-Zo mourns death of member amidst total shutdown, questions central security withdrawal

Hundreds of Kuki-Zo men and women clad in mourning attire gathered today at Sadar Hills' Phaijang village to bid farewell to one of their own. Lammang Kipgen, a 45-year-old father of five and a dedicated Kuki-Zo Village Volunteer, was laid to rest at the Martyrs' Cemetery, his life cut short in an attack early this morning at Bethel village.

The atmosphere was heavy with emotion as the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) in Sadar Hills, Kangpokpi District organized the burial ceremony, drawing together prominent leaders, civil society organizations and the grieving family. Yet, amidst the mourning, questions lingered regarding the withdrawal of central security forces from the region.

CoTU's Media Cell Coordinator, Ng. Lun Kipgen, voiced the community's concerns, highlighting the recent surge in militant activity following the departure of security forces. He recounted instances of violence, including a two-day gun battle and targeted attacks on villages.

The withdrawal of security forces, initially attributed to election duties has left the fringe areas exposed, allowing armed miscrenats to encroach closer, escalating tensions and endangering lives. Kipgen stated the need for accountability, urging the central government to address the security vacuum and safeguard the Kuki-Zo community.
