Manipur: Mera Hou Chongba festival celebrated with unity and joy at Kangla

The Festival of Oneness, Mera Houchongba 2024, was celebrated today at the sacred site of Kangla, symbolizing the enduring bond between the indigenous communities of Manipur’s hills and valleys. This annual event, observed on the 15th lunar day of the Mera month in the Meitei calendar, brings together diverse groups in a celebration of harmony and cultural exchange.

The festivities commenced at Sana Konung around 8 AM, where the titular king Leishemba Sanajaoba, also a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, led the Mera Wayungba flag hoisting ceremony. Following this, traditional rituals, including Men Tongba and Yenkhong Tamba, were performed at Kangla Uttra, marking the spiritual significance of the occasion.

Participants from various remote hill areas traveled to Imphal to join in the celebration. The day featured the exchange of gifts between hill and valley communities, along with vibrant cultural dance performances representing the rich heritage of different tribes. Many attendees expressed their joy and highlighted the importance of Mera Houchongba in strengthening the relationships among the indigenous peoples of Manipur.

MP Leishemba Sanajaoba extended his wishes to the people of Manipur, emphasizing that the festival fosters peace and prosperity throughout the state. Notably, Mera Houchongba is unique in its ability to unite the hills and valley communities, making it a day of general holiday in Manipur. The event was attended by numerous ministers, MLAs, and government officials.
