Manipur: Nine victims of Jiribam violence laid to rest amid tight security

In a sombre ceremony, the last rites of nine victims of recent violence in Manipur were conducted on November 22 under heavy security at Ningsingkhul Biodiversity Park. 

The tranquil setting provided a moment of solace for grieving families and residents as they mourned the tragic loss of lives caused by escalating regional tensions.

The victims included six women and children who were reportedly held hostage and killed by alleged Kuki militants, and two men who were fatally attacked on November 11 in Borobekra Sub-division. 

The final victim, 22-year-old Kh. Athouba Singh was killed during protests condemning the brutal killing of the six women.

After post-mortem examinations at Silchar Medical College and Hospital in Assam, the bodies were transported to Jiribam for the funeral. The community came together in a solemn display of grief, offering floral tributes and prayers for the deceased.

Laisram Chingkheiganba Singh (2.5 years)

Maibam Kesho (75 years)
Kh. Athouba Singh (22 years)

The killings have left a deep scar on the community, with residents struggling to come to terms with the profound loss. Many have expressed anger and despair, urging authorities to take swift action to restore peace and deliver justice.

"The loss of innocent lives, especially women and children, is unbearable. We demand immediate steps to prevent further violence and bring the perpetrators to justice," said a local resident at the ceremony.

The violence has underscored the ongoing challenges in Manipur, where ethnic and regional tensions have led to repeated clashes, causing immense suffering to communities caught in the crossfire. Authorities are under increasing pressure to address the root causes of the conflict and ensure safety and reconciliation.

As the community mourns, the call for peace resonates louder than ever, with families and neighbours urging the state to prioritize justice and harmony in the region.
