Manipur: Student abducted from college hostel rescued by police, eight suspects arrested

The Manipur police on Saturday morning rescued a kidnapped student of DM College of Science in Imphal and arrested eight alleged kidnappers along with arms and ammunition during a search operation at Yumnam Huidrom village, Wangoi police station of Imphal West district, the police said.

The student was abducted from New Boy’s Hostel of the DM College in broad day-light of Friday (December 8), afternoon.

Soon after receiving information about the abduction, police swung into action and carried out raids in different places of Imphal West district to trace the student and rescue him, said SP Imphal West, Shivakanta Singh.

Speaking to the media, SP Shivakanta said that Imphal PS received a complaint regarding kidnapping of one student namely, Laishram Chinglen Singh, 22 years from DM College of Science New Boy’s Hostel on December 8 at around 1.30 pm.

“The kidnappers demanded the parents of the student a ransom of Rs 15 lakhs for his safe release, threatening that failure to comply would result in their son being returned as a dead body”, said SP Shivakanta.

On receipt of the information, Imphal West District police immediately activated and raids were conducted at different places and at around 2 a.m of Saturday (today), the team of police raided at Yumnam Huidrom Makha Leikai, under jurisdiction of Wangoi PS, said SP and he added that during the raid, the missing student was found and recsued from a house belonging to one Asem Chaoba, 63 years old, alongside four suspected kidnappers, with another four suspected kidnappers nearby two vehicles.

The police team swiftly apprehended suspected kidnappers during the operation, he added.

Those suspected kidnappers identified as Khwairakpam Rajen Singh, Sukham James Singh, Moirangthem Amarjit Singh, Taorem Rohit Singh, Kayenpaibam Hemjit Singh, Sandam Romen Singh, Khagembam Dayananda Singh and Sarungbam Umananda are in police custody.

“From preliminary interrogation, it is revealed that the kidnappers belong to the KCP (PWG) groups and they are working under one Lamyanba Khuman”, SP added.

From their possession, two rifles, one pistol and a Swift car recovered.
