Manipur violence: Bodies of Kuki-Zo members airlifted from Imphal morgue

Manipur tribal body, Joint Philanthropic Organisation (JPO), has confirmed that the bodies of Kuki-Zo members lying at the Imphal morgue have been airlifted on December 14.

As per sources, the bodies of Kuki-Zo members reached Motbung LS ground Kangpokpi District which has been lying at the morgue since violence broke down in May 2023.

Further, the tribal body to honour the dead has urged all shops and vendors to be shut down including vehicles, and business establishments from 2:00 pm today.

Meanwhile, 41 bodies will be sent to Churachanpur and 19 to Kangpokpi district.

As per reports, more than 180 people were killed since the violence erupted on May 3 after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

Meiteis account for about 53 per cent of Manipur’s population and live mostly in the Imphal Valley, while tribals, which include Nagas and Kukis, constitute 40 per cent and reside mainly in the hill districts.
