Manipur violence: CM Biren Singh reports 200+ deaths since 2023; 7540 persons resettled

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has reported that altogether roughly 200 people have lost their lives amidst an ongoing crisis in the state since May 2023. 

In addressing the situation, he noted that around 12,247 FIRs have been registered, leading to the arrest of 625 individuals. 

The authorities have also recovered approximately 5,600 arms and weapons, including explosives, and about 35,000 rounds of ammunition.

CM Singh highlighted the significant progress made in tackling the challenges faced by the state. He acknowledged the central government's support, which has been instrumental in providing adequate security personnel and funds. 

Chief Minister N Biren Singh apologises people to the people of Manipur with regard to unrest occurring in the state since May 2023.

Addressing the media during the press conference held today at his secretariat, N Biren Singh extended New Year greetings to the people of state with the assurance of putting their best effort in restoring peace and normalcy in Manipur.

He expressed his concern about the ongoing Manipur crisis and apologised to the people of the state for making everyone to suffer due to ongoing unrest.

“The entire year is very unfortunate. I feel regret and I want to say sorry to the people of state for what is happening since last 3rd May 2023. Many people have lost their love one, left homeless. I really feel regret and apologies to all victim,” tendered apologies by CM.

Biren continued and said that there is hope of restoring peace and normalcy in coming year after seeing the progress of last three four months towards bringing peace. 

“I would like to appeal to all communities of the state that whatever happens is happen. We should forgive and forget for the past mistake and we have to start a new life filled peace and prosperous Manipur living with all recognised 34/35 tribes,” he appealed and also mentioned that any problem should short out through dialogue. Violence can’t settle any issue.

To media query, Biren said that the government is tirelessly working to improve law and order situation. Huge arms numbering around 5600 were recovered including explosive item, and ammunition of around 35,000, 625 people were arrested and 12247 FIR were lodged. 

Biren said that for safe and secure movement along national highways, the additional number for forces were deployed. In national highway number 2, another 17 companies of forces were deployed and 18 companies in the Imphal-Jiribam highways.

Stating about the welfare of displaced people, Biren said that enough funds were sanctioned from the central government to support internally displaced people.

The government has constructed 2660 pre-fabricated house and out of it, 2520 were occupied. Another 340 houses are in under construction. Apart from this, Rs 27 crore has been released for the construction of 931 permanent houses which is under construction, he informed. 

He also said Rs 1000 per displaced person have been distributed five times and for this Rs 30 crore was also released. For relief camp operation, Rs 280 crore was released. Health check-up is being carried out weekly in relief camps. So far 18,911 visit was made to relief camp by staff of the health department. 

Regarding resettlement of displaced people, he said that 7540 persons of 2058 families have been resettled. In Imphal west number of family resettled is 209, Imphal east is 293 families and number of person is 597; Bishnupur is 857 family and the number of person is 3428; Thoubal is 320 families and number of person is 1279; Jiribam is 77 families and population is 214; Noney is 75 families and number of person is 315 person, Kakching is 149 families and person is 600, Churachandpur is 65 families and number of person is 270 and Kangpokpi is 22 families and number of person is 110.  

Informing about progress of war on drugs, Biren said that the war on drugs campaign started from his first term in the year 2018 and continues till date. Under this campaign, 20,000 hectares of poppy plants were destroyed, more than 78,000 crores of drugs were seized 3700 drug smugglers were arrested, around 310-320 has been convicted. 

He said that even during this unrest period, fighting against drugs is ongoing on. Recently large size of poppy plantation were destroyed from various places like Ukhrul, Litan, Churachandpur, Ukhrul, Kangpokpi and Saikul. To save future generation from drug menace, state will relentlessly continue war on drugs campaign.

He informed that to prevent demographic imbalance , Aadhar link with birth certificate of newly born babies and their respective parent will initiate. This step was taken up to prevent duplicity of Adhar.

Central govern started NRC, particular area identified vulnerable areas identification and deployed security personal as a control mechanism of illegal immigrants, Biren stated.
