Imagi Meira, a prominent women’s organization in Manipur, has condemned both the state and central governments for their failure to resolve the ongoing conflict that has gripped the region for over a year. The organization accused the authorities of exacerbating the crisis rather than alleviating it, with the situation now reaching a dangerous escalation.
During a press conference at the Manipur Press Club, Thokchom Sujata, the convenor of Imagi Meira, expressed deep frustration over the prolonged unrest. She highlighted that the conflict, which has persisted for more than a year, has intensified to the point where Kuki militants have acquired the capability to launch drone attacks on Meitei-populated areas. Sujata warned that if the government does not take immediate and serious action, such attacks could potentially extend to central locations in the valley, including the Chief Minister's residence and the Raj Bhawan.
Sujata voiced her anguish over a recent drone attack in Koutruk, Imphal West, which resulted in the tragic death of a woman and left her daughter injured. She criticized the deployment of over 60,000 central forces in the state, arguing that their presence has been ineffective in curbing violence. "Their inaction during the recent drone attack is particularly troubling," she stated, adding that it would be better not to deploy forces at all if they are not committed to protecting lives and property.
The organization urged the central government to urgently find a resolution to the conflict. Sujata also issued a stern warning that Imagi Meira is prepared to launch various forms of agitation if the government continues to neglect the pressing issues in Manipur.
