Manipur yet again affected by flood just after one month, rescue operation on

A team from Loktak Development Authority (LDA) promptly carried out rescue operations in the flood-affected area of Singjamei under Imphal West today.

Apart from relief and rescue efforts, LDA officials are also overseeing assessments of river and stream conditions to facilitate effective downstream water drainage and identify potential choke points. Immediate clearing of obstructed areas such as weeds and garbage is underway to ensure unimpeded water flow.

Chairman of the Loktak Development Authority (LDA), Asnikumar Moirangthem, briefed to chief minister NBiren Singh on the ongoing flood relief and rescue operations conducted by LDA in coordination with various agencies, departments, and local volunteers.

The briefing took place during the CM's on-site inspection of the Singjamei area, where heavy rainfall has caused significant flooding.

Asnikumar Moirangthem expressed his commitment to efficiently respond to the needs of the affected populace and ensure timely assistance.

The operational efforts are also joined by Project Director L Bhagaton Singh and Superintending Engineer Ng Sanajaoba Meetei.

Close coordination with district authorities, government agencies, and local volunteers is ensuring a cohesive approach to the ongoing crisis.

The Loktak Development Authority acknowledges the invaluable support of the fishing community from Thanga, whose members and boats are being used to bolster ongoing relief efforts.

This collaboration exemplifies the enduring partnership between LDA and the Loktak Lake fishing community, which is pivotal in joint conservation efforts and sustainable livelihood initiatives.

Asnikumar Moirangthem emphasized that such unprecedented flash floods are occurring due to extensive deforestation in the catchment areas of rivers and streams flowing through Manipur Valley.

He expressed his sincere gratitude to the minister of RD and PR Y. Khemchand Singh for his proactive leadership and unwavering support throughout this challenging period of flood havoc.

With heavy rainfall forecasted to persist, exacerbating the flood situation across Imphal and surrounding areas, LDA will remain vigilant, stated Asnikumar Moirangthem while assuring that the team of LDA stands ready to extend support to affected communities and assist district administrations in implementing necessary precautionary and preventive measures.

The rescue operations were also joined by the NDRF Team, SDRF Team, District Administration, State Fire Services, Assam Rifles, and especially local volunteers for their dedicated service.

It may be mentioned that just after Imphal and several other districts are recovering from a widespread flood that wreaked havoc in May end due to cyclone Remal, different parts of the state has yet again been hit by flood due to intermittent rainfall since Monday.

The water level of several major rivers has breached the warning level. Some rivers are overflown causing flooding in areas of Imphal West, Imphal East, Kangpokpi, Senapati, Thoubal and Bishnupur districts.

The Government is taking steps to reinforce the embankments of the Imphal River, Kongba River and Iril River.
