The Manipur Pony and Polo Players’ Welfare Association (MPPPWA) has called on the concerned authorities to expedite the release of a long-pending grant intended for the Polo club, highlighting the severe challenges faced by pony owners in procuring adequate feed for their animals.
During a press conference held at Hapta Kangjeibung today, W Bronson, the secretary of MPPPWA, described the dire situation of pony owners. The main habitat for ponies at Lamphelpat was recently submerged due to flooding. While the government has provided a temporary feeding space at Hatta Kangjeibung, where many ponies have been housed since July 5, owners are struggling to sustain their animals.
"Pony owners are currently contributing Rs 100 each week, but this is insufficient. The health of the ponies is deteriorating daily," Bronson stated. He emphasized the urgent need for the Department of Veterinary to release the annual grant, which is crucial for the club’s operations and the welfare of the ponies.

Bronson also urged pony owners who have not yet registered with the department to do so within three days.
Addressing the issue of wandering ponies on roadsides, Bronson pointed out the significant inconvenience and hazards caused by such occurrences, including traffic accidents and injuries to the ponies. He appealed to the owners to ensure that their animals are kept in appropriate areas, such as Hatta Kangjeibung, to avoid these problems.
The recent floods have severely impacted the primary grazing grounds for the ponies. To alleviate the burden on pony owners, the government has designated Hapta Kangjeibung and Mapal Kangjeibung as alternative grazing areas. However, owners continue to seek additional support from the government for purchasing feed.
