One of the internally displaced persons (IDP) from Manipur stated the reason for their attempt to protest in Imphal East district on August 1.
Speaking to India Today NE, the man said, "PM Modi and Amit Shah burnt our houses. When we went to seek help from Assam Rifles, we were denied."
"Assam Rifles said it wasn't their job," the man added.
Approximately hundreds of IDPs from the Akampat relief camp in the district attempted to stage a protest but were stopped by security forces, leading to an altercation.
Clashes erupted between IDPs residing in a relief camp and security forces in the district after tear gas was used to disperse the agitators, the police said.
The relief camp residents held placards and banners in which they are demanding their rehabilitation and a resolution to the ethnic violence in the state so they could return to their homes at Moreh in Tengnoupal district, and other areas.
When the protesters came out, the police personnel as a means to stop them fired tear gas, and smoke bombs at the gate of the camp itself.
