Student-led protest in Manipur turned violent today as demonstrators clashed with police forces, resulting in multiple injuries. The unrest began as the deadline for a key demand expired at 1 pm which compelled the students and their supporters to march towards the Governor's residence.
The protest escalated quickly when the students, frustrated by the lack of response, attempted to advance towards the Governor's office around 2 pm. Police intervened after the protesters had moved a short distance, blocking their progress and urging them to appoint representatives for dialogue.
Despite the police's attempts to negotiate, the majority of students insisted on a direct meeting with the Governor. Tensions heightened when the authorities used tear gas shells to disperse the crowd. Several individuals were injured in the ensuing chaos, and while some were transported to local hospitals by ambulance, the exact number of casualties remains unclear.
